The Bluefield Beavers baseball team
rallied for an 11-2 win against Mount View on May 7th, a
team they had not beat all year. They went on to the
sectional championship game on Friday, May 8th, where
Bluefield lost by a final score of 2-5. Bluefield finishes
the season with a 9-12 record.
Beavers win over Bobcats

The Beavers baseball team gained a
victory on Friday with a 12-8 win over the Summers County
Bobcats to finish the season with a 6-10 record.
The Beavers picked
up their first run in the bottom of the first, when the
Summers
County
shortstop missed a ground ball off the bat of John Lyons,
allowing Chase Joyner to cross the plate and bring the
Beavers to a 1-0 lead.
Bluefield
continued to shine defensively in the top of the second with
a great catch and throw-out by Matt Keczan at shortstop,
holding the Bobcats scoreless.
Cody Wassum took ball four in the top of
the second with the bases, bringing Jacob Powell in to score
the Beavers� second run. Craig Cardwell and Chase Joyner
soon followed, both coming home on wild pitches to bring the
Beavers to a commanding 4-0 lead.
Matt Keczan lead the Beavers forward in
the third inning, bringing Jacob Powell across the plate
with an RBI single. Jake Lilly followed up with an RBI
groundout, scoring Craig Cardwell for the Beavers� 6th
run of the game.
The Bobcats got on the board in the top
of the fourth with a 2-run double by Mark Stiltner. Another
run was scored later in the inning with a ground ball
fielders choice by Timmy Wynes to make it a 6-3 ballgame.
Bluefield
let loose in the fourth inning, beginning with Nick
Williams� rip to center field, bringing Alex Morris across
the plate, who was pinch running for Warren Furrow. Craig
Cardwell continued his hitting streak with an RBI single,
bringing Lyons
across the plate for an 8-3 lead. Matt Keczan came up with
his second hit of the night, a line drive that tipped off
the top of the glove of Summers
County second
baseman Joey Lilly, scoring another run for the Beavers.
With 1 out, Jake Lilly took a high pitch for a ride into
deep left-center field for a two-run double, widening the
Beavers� lead to 11-3. Lilly stole third base and then
scored by a wild pitch, making it a 12-3
Bluefield
lead.
Summers
County
responded in the 6th inning, starting with an RBI
single by Nick Bennett. They later scored two runs off two
Bluefield
errors. Shawn Weikle drove in an additional run with an RBI
single. The Bobcats picked up their 8th run off
of a balk committed by pitcher John Lyons, who had just been
brought in to relieve Warren Furrow on the mound.
John Lyons got two strikeouts in the top
of the 7th to finish the ballgame with a 12-8
final score.
The Beavers will
start sectional play on Monday, May 5th with a
trip down the road to
Mount
View
High School
to take on the Iaeger Cubs at 6 PM. The winner of Monday's
game will play against the Golden Knights of Mount View
Tuesday at 6 PM at Mount View High School for the sectional
championship!
